Most travelers spend a night in Arusha before the safari begins, allowing time to rest and prepare before entering the wilderness.

The park is home to elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, waterbucks, warthogs, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and many bird species. During the dry season, animals gather near the Tarangire River, creating excellent game viewing opportunities.

Serengeti National Park – Home of the Great Wildebeest Migration

Serengeti National Park is one of Africa's most famous wildlife destinations and hosts the world's largest terrestrial animal migration. Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

Great Wildebeest Migration Experience

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of Africa's most remarkable wildlife spectacles, and this 7 Days Great Serengeti Migration Tanzania Safari gives you several days to explore the Serengeti while following seasonal wildlife movements. The migration is a continuous natural cycle in which millions of wildebeest move through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water, accompanied by large numbers of zebras and gazelles.

With three nights in Serengeti National Park, you have more time to explore different areas of the park and search for the migration according to the season of your visit. The exact location of the herds changes throughout the year and is influenced by rainfall, water availability, and the growth of fresh grass.

Witness the Movement of the Herds

During your Serengeti game drives, you may encounter large concentrations of wildebeest moving across the open plains. Watching thousands of animals travelling together creates an unforgettable sense of scale and provides excellent opportunities for wildlife photography.

Predators Following the Migration

The movement of large numbers of herbivores also attracts predators. Depending on the season and location, you may have opportunities to see lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and other predators hunting or observing the migrating herds.

A Different Migration Experience in Every Season

The migration does not remain in one location throughout the year. During the calving season, large concentrations may be found in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. Later in the year, the herds gradually move toward the Western and Northern Serengeti before eventually returning south as the annual cycle continues.

More Time in the Serengeti

One of the major advantages of this seven-day itinerary is the extended time dedicated to Serengeti National Park. Multiple days of game drives provide greater flexibility to explore different wildlife areas and increase your opportunities to encounter seasonal migration activity.

River Crossings Are Natural Events

During periods when the herds are moving through northern Serengeti, there may be opportunities to witness river-crossing activity. However, river crossings are completely natural and unpredictable events. They cannot be guaranteed on a particular date or safari, even when the herds are known to be in the surrounding area.

Your experienced safari guide will use knowledge of the Serengeti, seasonal patterns, and current wildlife activity to help you explore the most promising areas during your safari. The result is an authentic Great Wildebeest Migration experience combined with the opportunity to discover the wider wildlife and landscapes of Northern Tanzania.

Wildlife You Can See

This 7 Days Great Serengeti Migration Tanzania Safari offers exceptional opportunities to experience Tanzania's diverse wildlife across Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. From large herds of wildebeest and zebras to iconic African predators and elephants, each destination offers a different wildlife experience.

The exact animals you encounter depend on the season, location, weather, and natural wildlife movements. Your experienced safari guide will help identify animals and select suitable game-drive areas based on current conditions.

Wildebeest & Migrating Herds

The Serengeti is the main highlight of this safari. Depending on your travel season, you may encounter large concentrations of wildebeest moving through the ecosystem as part of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration.

Zebras & Gazelles

Wildebeest are commonly accompanied by zebras and various species of gazelles. These grazing animals form an important part of the Serengeti ecosystem and provide spectacular wildlife-viewing opportunities across the open plains.

Lions, Cheetahs & Leopards

The abundance of herbivores attracts some of Africa's most impressive predators. During game drives, you may have opportunities to observe lions, cheetahs, and leopards in their natural habitat.

Elephants

Tarangire National Park is particularly well known for its elephants. You may encounter large elephant herds moving through the park, feeding around its famous baobab trees, or gathering near water sources.

African Buffalo

Buffaloes can be encountered in different habitats across the safari destinations. Large herds can sometimes be seen grazing in open grasslands or moving through areas with thicker vegetation.

Giraffes & Antelopes

Giraffes and a variety of antelope species add to the diversity of wildlife you may encounter. Their presence across different habitats provides excellent opportunities for observation and photography.

Hyenas & Other Predators

Spotted hyenas are an important part of the Serengeti ecosystem and can often be encountered during game drives. Depending on the location and season, other carnivores and scavengers may also be observed.

Rhinoceros

The Ngorongoro Crater provides an opportunity to search for the critically endangered black rhinoceros. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the crater is one of Tanzania's important areas for rhinoceros conservation.

Hippos & Crocodiles

Depending on the areas visited, you may encounter hippos around suitable water sources and crocodiles near rivers and other aquatic habitats.

Birdlife

Bird enthusiasts can also enjoy a rich variety of bird species throughout the safari. The diverse habitats of Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro support colourful resident and migratory birds.

This safari provides opportunities to search for Africa's famous Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. Because wildlife is free to move through its natural habitat, sightings of every species cannot be guaranteed.

Migration by Month / Season

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a continuous natural cycle that takes place throughout the year across the Serengeti ecosystem. The location of the herds changes according to rainfall, fresh grazing, water availability, and natural animal movements. Understanding the migration by month can help you choose the most suitable time for your 7 Days Great Serengeti Migration Tanzania Safari.

January – March: Calving Season

During these months, large numbers of wildebeest are commonly found in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area. This period is famous for the calving season, when large numbers of young wildebeest are born. The concentration of herbivores can also attract predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas.

April – May: Green Season & Herd Movement

As the herds begin moving away from the southern plains, seasonal rainfall supports fresh vegetation across the Serengeti. This is a beautiful time to experience green landscapes, wildlife activity and the continuing movement of the migration, often with fewer visitors than during peak travel periods.

June – July: Western & Northern Movement

During the dry season, the migrating herds continue their movement toward the Western and Northern Serengeti. Depending on current conditions, this period can provide excellent opportunities to observe large herds gathering and moving through different parts of the ecosystem.

August – October: Northern Serengeti

The herds are often concentrated in the Northern Serengeti during this period. This is one of the most popular seasons for travelers hoping to experience dramatic migration activity and possible Mara River crossings. River crossings are natural events and their timing cannot be guaranteed.

November – December: Return to the Southern Serengeti

With the arrival of the short rains, the herds gradually begin moving south again in search of fresh grazing. The migration eventually returns toward the southern Serengeti and Ndutu areas, continuing the annual cycle.

How Your Safari Dates Affect the Experience

Because the migration follows natural environmental conditions rather than a fixed timetable, the exact location of the herds cannot be predicted with complete certainty. Your safari guide will use seasonal knowledge and current wildlife conditions to help identify promising areas for game drives.

Whether you want to experience the calving season, follow large herds across the Serengeti, search for predators, or increase your chances of seeing northern migration activity, choosing your travel period carefully can make your Tanzania migration safari even more rewarding.

What to Expect on This Safari

This 7 Days Great Serengeti Migration Tanzania Safari combines diverse wildlife, spectacular landscapes, extended game drives, and the excitement of following the Great Wildebeest Migration. From Tarangire's elephant-rich landscapes to the endless plains of Serengeti and the wildlife-filled Ngorongoro Crater, each destination offers a different side of Northern Tanzania.

Tarangire Wildlife Experience

Your safari begins in Tarangire National Park, where you can expect impressive elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, open savannah, and a variety of wildlife around the park's water sources. Tarangire provides an excellent introduction to Tanzania's wildlife before continuing toward the Serengeti.

Extended Serengeti Game Drives

With three nights in Serengeti National Park, you will have more time to explore different areas of the park. Your game drives will focus on wildlife activity and, depending on the season, areas where the migrating herds are most likely to be found.

Great Wildebeest Migration Encounters

Depending on your travel dates, you may encounter large herds of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving across the Serengeti. The exact location of the migration changes throughout the year, so sightings and herd concentrations cannot be guaranteed at a specific location.

Big Five Wildlife Opportunities

The safari provides opportunities to search for lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems are particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing, although sightings of every Big Five species are not guaranteed.

Ngorongoro Crater Exploration

You will explore the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, where the crater floor supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife. Expect beautiful scenery, diverse habitats, and opportunities to observe animals in one of Tanzania's most distinctive natural environments.

Experienced Safari Guide

Throughout the journey, your experienced safari guide will provide information about wildlife, animal behaviour, local ecosystems, and the areas you visit. The guide will also monitor wildlife activity and seasonal migration movements when planning game drives.

Comfortable 4x4 Safari Travel

Expect to travel in a comfortable 4x4 safari vehicle equipped for wildlife viewing. The open or pop-up roof design provides excellent visibility during game drives and good opportunities for photography.

Changing Safari Conditions

Safari conditions can vary depending on the season and location. You may experience cool mornings, warm afternoons, sunshine, dust, rain, and changing road conditions. Some travel days can also involve long driving distances between destinations.

A Flexible and Authentic Wildlife Adventure

Wildlife is unpredictable, and no two safari days are exactly the same. Rather than following a guaranteed schedule of animal sightings, you will explore with an experienced guide who adapts the day's activities according to weather, road conditions, wildlife behaviour, and current migration movements.

Overall, expect seven days of authentic Tanzania safari experiences, memorable game drives, spectacular scenery, and the opportunity to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration while exploring Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro.

Migration by Month / Season

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round natural cycle across the Serengeti ecosystem. The herds continuously move in search of fresh grass and water, so their exact location changes according to rainfall, grazing conditions, and seasonal patterns. This 7 Days Serengeti Migration Safari gives you an opportunity to experience the migration according to the season of your visit.

January – March: Calving Season

During January, February, and March, large concentrations of wildebeest are commonly found around the southern Serengeti and Ndutu areas. This is the famous calving season, when thousands of young wildebeest are born. The abundance of young animals also attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, creating excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities.

April – May: Green Season & Migration Movement

As the rains continue, the Serengeti becomes greener and the herds gradually begin moving toward the Western Serengeti. This period offers beautiful landscapes, abundant grazing animals, and fewer crowds in many areas. Rainfall can make some roads challenging, but the scenery can be particularly rewarding.

June – July: Western & Northern Serengeti

During June and July, the migration continues toward the Western and Northern Serengeti. Large herds may gather around areas with suitable grazing and water. Depending on the timing and environmental conditions, this period can offer exciting opportunities to observe the movement of the herds and increasing predator activity.

August – October: Northern Serengeti & Mara River

August to October is one of the most popular periods for experiencing the migration in the Northern Serengeti. Large herds may be found around the Mara River region, where river crossings can occur. However, river crossings are completely natural events and cannot be guaranteed on a particular day.

November – December: Return to the Southern Serengeti

The short rains encourage the wildebeest to begin their gradual movement southward. The herds follow fresh grazing areas and eventually return toward the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, completing another stage of the annual migration cycle.

Which Season Is Best for Your Safari?

There is no single month that guarantees the best migration experience. Each season offers something different, from the calving season and predator activity to large herd movements and possible river crossings. Your ideal travel period depends on the type of migration experience you would most like to see.

Because the migration follows nature rather than a fixed timetable, the exact location of the herds cannot be guaranteed. Your safari guide will use seasonal knowledge and current wildlife conditions to identify the most promising areas during your safari.

During the safari, you will have opportunities to search for lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinoceroses. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro ecosystems are particularly rich in wildlife, although sightings of specific animals can never be guaranteed.

Ngorongoro Crater Adventure

Expect spectacular scenery and excellent wildlife viewing when exploring the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater floor supports a diverse range of animals and provides a memorable final wildlife experience on this Northern Tanzania safari.

Comfortable 4x4 Safari Travel

You will travel between destinations and enjoy game drives in a purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle. The pop-up roof provides excellent visibility, allowing you to observe wildlife comfortably and take photographs during game drives.

Professional Local Safari Guide

Your safari guide will accompany you throughout the journey, providing information about wildlife, local ecosystems, landscapes, and the Great Migration. Their knowledge also helps with locating wildlife and adapting game drives to current conditions.

Changing Weather and Road Conditions

Conditions can vary depending on the season. Expect cool mornings, warmer afternoons, changing weather, dust on some roads, and occasional rain. Driving times and routes may also vary according to road conditions and wildlife movements.

Unpredictable but Authentic Wildlife Encounters

Safari is a genuine wilderness experience, so wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Animals move freely through their natural habitats, making every game drive different. Flexibility and patience are an important part of experiencing Tanzania's wildlife.

Overall, expect seven days of spectacular landscapes, diverse wildlife, exciting game drives, and unforgettable moments across Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro, with the added possibility of experiencing the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are answers to common questions about this 7 Days Great Serengeti Migration Tanzania Safari, including the Great Wildebeest Migration, wildlife, accommodation, travel seasons, and what to expect during your safari.

1. What is included in this 7 Days Serengeti Migration Safari?

The safari includes the services and arrangements stated in your selected package, such as safari transportation, professional guiding, accommodation, meals, park entry fees, and game drives where applicable. Please check the Safari Inclusions section for the complete list of services included in your booking.

2. What destinations will I visit during this safari?

This 7-day safari combines three major Northern Tanzania destinations: Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The itinerary gives you an opportunity to experience different landscapes and wildlife habitats within one safari.

3. When is the best time to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration?

The migration takes place throughout the year, but different months provide different experiences. January to March is associated with the calving season, while June to October is generally a popular period for following the herds in the Western and Northern Serengeti. The exact location of the animals depends on natural conditions.

4. Can I see the wildebeest migration during any month?

Yes. The Great Wildebeest Migration is a continuous annual cycle rather than a single event. The herds move through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year in response to rainfall, fresh grazing, and water availability.

5. Can I see a river crossing during this safari?

River crossings may be possible when the migration reaches the Northern Serengeti and Mara River region. However, crossings are completely natural and unpredictable events, so they cannot be guaranteed on a particular day or safari.

6. What wildlife can I see on this safari?

You may encounter wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas, hippos, rhinoceroses, various antelope species, and many bird species. Wildlife sightings depend on the season, location, weather, and animal movements.

7. Can I see the Big Five?

Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro provide excellent opportunities to search for the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros. However, because these are wild animals, sightings of all five cannot be guaranteed.

8. How many nights will I spend in the Serengeti?

This itinerary includes three nights in Serengeti National Park. The extended stay gives you more time for game drives and wildlife viewing compared with shorter Serengeti safari itineraries.

9. Where will I stay during the safari?

Accommodation is provided in selected safari lodges or tented camps around Tarangire, Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Highlands. The exact accommodation can depend on availability, travel dates, and the accommodation category selected.

10. What type of safari vehicle will we use?

You will travel in a purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle designed for comfortable long-distance travel and wildlife viewing. The pop-up roof provides excellent visibility during game drives and good opportunities for photography.

11. Is this safari private or shared?

The travel arrangement depends on the package and booking option selected. Private safaris provide a more personalized experience, while joining or shared safaris allow travelers to share the vehicle and safari experience with other guests.

12. Is this safari suitable for first-time safari travelers?

Yes. This safari is suitable for first-time visitors to Tanzania as well as experienced safari travelers. Your professional guide will assist you throughout the journey and provide information about wildlife, destinations, and local ecosystems.

13. What should I pack for this safari?

Recommended items include lightweight clothing, a warm layer for cool mornings, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, personal toiletries, a reusable water bottle, a camera, spare batteries, and any personal travel essentials.

14. What is the weather like during the safari?

Weather varies depending on the season and destination. Mornings can be cool, while afternoons are generally warmer. Rainfall can occur during the rainy seasons, and temperatures may differ between the Serengeti plains and the cooler Ngorongoro Highlands.

15. How long are the daily game drives?

Game-drive duration varies according to the day's itinerary, wildlife activity, road conditions, and the location of the animals. Some days may include extended game drives, while travel days may combine transportation with wildlife viewing.

16. Can I take photographs during the safari?

Yes. Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro provide excellent photography opportunities. You can photograph wildlife, landscapes, birds, and the dramatic scenery of Northern Tanzania. A camera with a suitable zoom lens and spare batteries is recommended.

17. Is Tarangire worth including in a migration safari?

Yes. Tarangire adds a different wildlife experience to the migration-focused Serengeti portion of the safari. The park is particularly known for elephants, baobab trees, diverse birdlife, and seasonal wildlife concentrations around water sources.

18. Can the migration location be predicted exactly?

No. The wildebeest follow natural environmental conditions rather than a fixed calendar. Seasonal patterns can help with planning, but the exact location of the herds can change depending on rainfall, grazing, and water availability.

19. How far in advance should I book this safari?

Booking in advance is recommended, especially if you plan to travel during popular migration periods. Early booking gives you better opportunities to secure preferred accommodation, travel dates, and safari arrangements.

20. Can this 7-day safari be customized?

Depending on your travel requirements, the safari can be discussed and customized around your preferred travel dates, accommodation level, destinations, and additional experiences. Contact Macpace Tours & Safaris to discuss your preferred arrangements.

21. What happens if the weather changes?

Your safari guide will monitor conditions and adjust the day's activities when necessary. Weather can affect road conditions and wildlife movements, but changing conditions are also part of the authentic Tanzania safari experience.

22. Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

No. Wildlife moves freely through its natural environment, so no particular animal sighting can be guaranteed. Your experienced guide will use local knowledge and current wildlife information to maximize your opportunities for excellent game viewing.

23. Why choose a 7-day migration safari instead of a shorter safari?

A seven-day itinerary gives you more time to explore multiple destinations and enjoy extended wildlife viewing. Three nights in the Serengeti also provide additional opportunities to search for seasonal migration activity rather than rushing through the park.
