Tanzania’s third largest National park is known for its majestic baobab trees that dot the landscape, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. The Tarangire River is the centerpiece of this park which is famous for some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa. Here you may see lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, Oryx, eland, giraffe and zebra. Post the game drive, you will head back to your camp/lodge where a delicious dinner awaits you.

Day

2

Transfer to Ndutu

We start around 7:00 AM and head towards the Ndutu region. The drive to Ndutu is about 4 hours from Tarangire or about 2.5 hours from Karatu. Once you reach Ndutu you will begin game drives with a convenient stop for your picnic lunch. Sweeping grasslands cover the region which gradually fade into the Serengeti. Ndutu forms a part of the route for the annual migration of more than 2 million wildebeests and thousands of zebra, antelope and gazelle through the Serengeti eco system. During game drives between December and April, you will be able to see the great migration in this region. Between Mid Jan and Feb, calving happens here and it attracts hordes of predators prying on vulnerable young wildebeest. Crested with Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek, these waterholes offer plenty of wildlife game during the dry season. The Ndutu is also the home ground for 6 species of big cats – leopard, lion, cheetah, caracal, serval and wildcat. The action-packed game drive will end late in the evening by around 6PM. You will now head towards your choice of accommodation, where a freshly prepared dinner awaits you. Ensure you get some good rest and recharge yourself for another eventful day.

Day

Today, we have full day to explore Ndutu. You can either have a relaxed breakfast and depart with packed lunch boxes for a full day game drive around 8:00 AM and return to the lodge late afternoon around 5:30 PM. Or you can depart after breakfast at 6:20 AM on an early morning game drive. Discover Tarangire National Park

Explore Tarangire's distinctive landscapes, known for its large elephant populations, iconic baobab trees, seasonal water sources and diverse wildlife. The park provides a different safari environment from the open plains of Ndutu.

The Ndutu area is one of the most fascinating places to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration. During the calving period, large numbers of wildebeest gather across the open plains, creating a dynamic environment where herbivores, predators and other wildlife interact. This 5-day safari gives you dedicated time in the Ndutu area to experience this seasonal wildlife activity while also exploring Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.

02

Experience the Calving Season

Ndutu is especially well known for its calving season, when large numbers of wildebeest gather to give birth. The abundance of young animals can create fascinating wildlife viewing opportunities and contributes to increased predator activity in the ecosystem.

03

Look for Predator Activity

The presence of large herbivore herds can attract predators such as lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. Your professional safari guide will help you understand predator behavior and identify wildlife activity during game drives.

04

Enjoy Extended Game Drives

Spending two nights in the Ndutu area allows more time to explore different parts of the ecosystem. Game drives can follow wildlife activity across the plains and around seasonal water sources depending on current conditions.

05

Capture Wildlife Photography

The combination of migration herds, open grasslands, predators and dramatic skies makes Ndutu an excellent destination for wildlife and landscape photography. Travelers can capture a wide variety of natural scenes throughout the game drives.

06

Observe a Dynamic Ecosystem

The Ndutu ecosystem is constantly changing with seasonal rainfall, animal movements and grazing patterns. Each game drive can therefore offer a different wildlife experience depending on where animals are located.

What to Expect on This 5-Day Ndutu Migration Safari

Get a clear picture of the wildlife, landscapes, game drives, accommodation and daily safari experience you can expect during your journey through Tarangire, Ndutu and Ngorongoro.

This five-day Tanzania safari is designed around wildlife viewing and the seasonal Ndutu Migration experience. Each day combines game drives, scenic travel and time in some of Northern Tanzania's most important wildlife areas. Conditions in the bush can change naturally, so the exact wildlife encounters, animal locations and daily timing may vary.

01

Early Morning Game Drives

Expect some early starts during the safari. Morning hours can provide excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing when many animals are active and temperatures are more comfortable.

02

Extended Wildlife Viewing

The safari gives you time to observe wildlife rather than simply driving through the parks. Your guide will look for animals, interpret their behavior and adapt the game drive according to local conditions.

03

Ndutu Migration Experience

When traveling during the appropriate migration period, expect to explore the Ndutu ecosystem where large concentrations of wildebeest and other grazing animals may gather.

04

Seasonal Calving Activity

During the calving season, Ndutu can become an important breeding and nursery area for wildebeest. The presence of young animals can also influence predator activity.

05

Changing Wildlife Locations

Wildlife does not follow a fixed schedule. Animals move according to food, water, weather and natural behavior, meaning each game drive can offer a different experience.

06

Scenic Landscape Changes

Expect a variety of landscapes, from Tarangire's baobab country and woodland areas to the open plains of Ndutu and the dramatic volcanic scenery surrounding Ngorongoro.

07

Safari Road Travel

A Tanzania safari involves travel on a mixture of paved roads and unpaved safari tracks. Some sections can be bumpy, particularly inside wildlife areas and during certain weather conditions.

08

Comfortable Safari Accommodation

At the end of each safari day, you will have time to rest at your selected accommodation. Accommodation arrangements depend on the package category, availability and travel dates.

09

Meals During the Safari

Meals are arranged according to the safari itinerary and accommodation plan. Picnic lunches may be provided on longer game-drive days to maximize time in the wildlife areas.

10

Professional Safari Guide

Your safari guide will assist with navigation, wildlife spotting and interpretation while helping you understand the ecosystems, animals and landscapes encountered along the journey.

11

Variable Weather Conditions

Weather can change during the safari. Morning temperatures may feel cool while afternoons can become warmer, and seasonal rain can affect road and wildlife conditions.

12

Flexible Wildlife Viewing

Game drives may be adjusted according to wildlife activity, road conditions and local observations. This flexibility helps make the most of the natural safari environment.

The Heart of the Experience: Ndutu

The highlight of this itinerary is the time spent exploring the Ndutu ecosystem during the migration season. Rather than treating Ndutu as a quick stop, the itinerary allows dedicated time to explore the area and search for migration herds, predators and other wildlife influenced by the seasonal concentration of animals.

Migration Herds Search for seasonal wildebeest concentrations
Predator Activity Opportunities to observe natural predator behavior
Open Plains Explore the distinctive Ndutu landscape
Wildlife Photography Varied opportunities for wildlife photography

Important Safari Reality: A safari takes place in a natural environment, not a controlled wildlife park. No specific animal sighting can be guaranteed. Your guide will use experience, local knowledge and current conditions to maximize your opportunities while respecting wildlife and park regulations.
